The interview
"This is wrong", he thought. He was conducting these regular "interviews" because human nature was his passion. You have to really understand - you have to really, really dig deep into what a soul is if you want to design the perfect eternal torment for it. He was very good at doing this. No. Not good. He was an artist. He has spent millennia perfecting this skill making sure to understand the intricacies of human thought and development. But this was wrong. "This soul does not belong here. This has to be a mistake.". There was no evil in this soul, there was nothing to repent for and, conversely, there was almost no way to torment it. "Hell, the only torment this soul would understand would be if I put it in a state of ... constantly not knowing how much to tip the waiter".
OK, fair enough, technically this soul had been an atheist and technically atheists ended up in hell. That was the letter of The Book, but the interpretation has been literal for ages. Unless there's something he's missing (and how could there be?) then somebody made a mistake. Somebody FROM ABOVE had made a mistake.
But that is impossible, of course, no point in even considering it. They don't make mistakes. Hah! how ridiculous to think that there is a mistake above! No, no, it must be him. It's true, he has been working on more ... administrative tasks lately and humans are finicky and constantly changing. Maybe... yes, maybe he lost touch. This evil sould in front of him must be playing him like a fiddle (the audacity!).
